The Prayer-Forgiveness Connection
Monday 16-03-2026
Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins. Mark 11:24-25
As Jesus and His disciples walked along a familiar path one morning, they encountered the fig tree that Jesus had rebuked only twenty-four hours prior. Peter, struck by the immediacy of the result, exclaimed that the tree had withered from the roots.
Jesus used the withered tree experience to teach them. He articulated two pillars of the spiritual life: the principle of confession and the principle of prayer.
Faith and Prayer
In verse 23, Jesus describes a faith so resolute that it can command a mountain to be lifted and thrown into the sea. This is the principle of confession. It suggests that when the heart is devoid of doubt and the mouth speaks in alignment with divine truth, the physical world must respond.
He then transitions, in verse 24, to the principle of prayer.
Clogged Pipelines
However, Jesus does not end the lesson there. In verse 25, He insists that when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, you must forgive them.
It is striking that almost every time Jesus taught on the efficacy of prayer, He coupled it with the necessity of forgiveness. He identifies a silent thief that can neutralize the boldest confession and the most fervent petition: the presence of offense in the heart.
I will use a water pipe analogy to explain this. Even if the reservoir is full, and the pressure from the source is optimum, if there is a blockage within the pipe, the flow at the faucet is reduced. Flow is only as much as the patency of the pipes. Unforgiveness acts as that internal blockage. You may be speaking to the mountain and praying with intensity, yet the offense you harbour creates a resistance that hinders spiritual results.
The word trespass carries the literal meaning of stepping beyond a boundary or falling away from a path. Jesus explains that as we release others from their debts to us, the Father releases us from our own excesses. There is a reciprocal flow of grace that is maintained by a heart that refuses to be a warehouse for bitterness.
Let Them Go!
No grudge is worth a blocked prayer. No person or past hurt is important enough to stand between you and God. Let it go.
We do not forgive because the offense was small or because the person deserves it. We forgive because we have been forgiven. We release others as an act of stewardship over our own spiritual progress.
Before you command the mountain to move, look into your own heart. Ensure the channel between you and the Father is not blocked by the debris of old wounds. Spiritual authority is not just about the words you speak; it is about the state of the soul from which those words flow.
Prayer
Lord, I examine my heart in your presence today. I choose to let go of every person and every offense that I have carried. I refuse to allow bitterness to hinder my progress or obstruct my prayers. In the name of Jesus, I release them and I receive your forgiveness for my own trespasses. I declare that my heart is a clear channel for your power to flow. Amen.

The bible is truly is our instructional manual. We have it all there. How to live. How to make things work just right. God wants sons to learn his nature of love and love does not keep a record of wrongs nor delight in evil. God is saying, I will work for you, granting you your heart desires as far as you have faith in me, your petition will be granted however I won't do it for an unforgiving heart 'cos it's nothing like mine.
"Spiritual authority is not just about the words we speak, it's about the state of the soul from which those words flow". I've not seen Mk. 11:24-25 in this light before. It was just a passage I confess to assure God of my faith and total believe in Him so I could obtain certain promises now I see it more as a guide to prayer, an instruction, a father excepting much more from a son. I won't disappoint Him, I won't pick offence. Yuck! They toxic and they stink😵💫
Thank you, Pastor.
